Voiture de Madame: 1993 Renault Clio Williams
This 1993 Renault Clio Williams is a one lady-owner car, that has received much restoration work and some useful upgrades. Introduced in 1992 as a limited homologation special initially only 500 cars were produced. Its success was so great however that Renault quickly decided to build a second and even a third batch, much to the chagrin of the buyers of the first series. It is now for sale in de Champagne-Ardennes region in France. Find it here on Ebay France for €9,500.

Replace Tony With Tommy: 1969 Maserati Ghibli
9/20/2009 Update: This Ghibli did not meet reserve at $41,250 with 9 bidders. The seller commented below that the reserve was missed by about $2k. We’ll see if it is re-listed.
From 9/17/2009:
This 1969 Maserati Ghibli has been given an American heart transplant and now runs a 350 cubic inch Chevrolet V8 and a Muncie 4-speed. It looks fantastic in light metallic blue with a black interior and retains the signature knock-off alloy wheels. No hack jobs here, this looks like a very clean conversion and it will allow you to part ways with your expensive Italian mechanic. Find it here on eBay in Grand Prarie, Texas.

Well Trimmed: Euro 1981 BMW 635csi Coupe
The Euro 6-series coupes are the best ones to own because of their slimmer bumpers look the way the Bavarians intended. Lowering one over the right wheels, in this case 16″ Alpina copies with exposed lugs, makes for a great looking coupe at a ridiculously low price. This one will require a slush fund for inevitable maintenance and some sorting, but it has excellent style. Find it here on eBay in Hermosa Beach, California with a very low reserve already met.

Event Report: California Melee Day 2
Day two of the California Melee concluded with sunny skies over the Pacific Ocean as we reached our destination for the evening. The day started warm and dry but the entire afternoon was filled with heavy rain, fog, and poor visibility. The roadsters got wet, the roads became slick, and the optional dirt sections were mostly avoided. Many of the participants had to try out antique Italian and British windshield wiper systems that hadn’t been exercised in months. Results varied.

Shipped Back: US-Spec 1959 Fiat 500
The 500 is one of the most successful Fiats ever, playing a major role in Italy’s mass-motorization. Here is a restored car which proves that Fiat toyed with importation into the USA even thought this car was less than half the size of the average American sedan at that time. This car is one of 300 US-spec 500s that were built between 1958 and 1962. It is now for sale in Italy and can be found here on Ebay France for €16.000.

Red Bluffed: 2009 California Melee Day 1
For today’s start of the 2009 California Melee we were greeted with thunder and lightning in San Francisco. That was enough to make the locals skiddish, but only about two hours later we were feeling the arid heat of rural Northern California as we headed for our overnight in Red Bluff. The shot below sums up what the event is all about: cool vintage cars, owners unafraid to drive them, camaraderie, and deserted roads stretching across amazing countryside. We are lucky to be here.

1961 MGA Roadster + Datsun 6-cylinder Power
This 1961 MGA Roadster has had the stock 4-cylinder swapped out for a big Datsun 240Z engine. We’ve never seen this swap before, and it looks like it is not yet complete, but the asking price is so low that maybe the car can be made complete or even put back to stock. It was first listed in Craigslist in NorCal, but now the seller is fishing in the SoCal pool. Find it here on Craigslist in Mendocino, California for $4400.

Willing Platform: 2-Owner 1972 Datsun 240Z
9/12/2009 Update: We discovered today that this 240Z was purchased by a BaT reader local to Santa Rosa who now has the car along on the California Melee. The car looks pristine in person and we took the shot below while nearing our destination tonight. He’s added a MOMO steering wheel and painted the wheel centers to resemble American Racing Libras. The car looks excellent and we have a hard time thinking of a better event car for the money.

Crazy Clean Stocker: 1970 Chevrolet El Camino
9/12/2009 Update: This El Camino sold via Buy-It-Now for $11,450 just a few hours after being featured here on BaT. Somebody got a great deal.
From 9/11/2009:
This 1970 El Camino falls somewhere between a survivor and a restored car and seems like an incredible deal for the asking price. It has had extensive recent work including paint and engine, and the seller includes extensive documentation. Something about the time warp originality of this car makes it just too cool. Unrestored Survivor: 1973 Porsche 914 1.7
9/15/2009 Update: This 914 received an amazing 21 best offers, the highest of which was $4600, but the $5350 Buy-It-Now option was not selected and the car did not sell.
From 9/9/2009:
This 1973 Porsche 914 is a real sweetheart, still wearing almost all original orange paint and showing no rust. The car shows some chips and parking lot dings, but overall is a real time capsule. Orange 914’s always make us think of the factory GT’s, but this one we’d leave alone right down to the steel wheels and hubcaps. Find it here on eBay in Santa Paula, California with a reasonable Buy-It-Now price.
